Back to basics- a site refresher

While your site and business focus may switch from the actual Web site and design to SEO/SEM principles and social media campaigns, it is a good time to take a step back from your site and revisit it as an interested prospect. Often times we are too focused on other concepts and forget we can engage or deter our visitors in just about one click. If there is a broken link or outdated content, the visitor might assume that the lack of attention to the Web site will reflect as lack of attention to work. Take a few minutes and use this list to be sure your site is doing its job.

•    Be sure there are no page errors- Test all links. If there are news story links or videos embedded in your content, be sure the stories and videos still exist on the net. On occasion these links expire and you do not want to link to content that does not appear.
•    Test e-mail capture to ensure it is working properly- If prospects are filling out data to request information and it is not being collected, those are lost opportunities. Even worse, if they receive an error and the information is erased, they will most likely not take the time to fill out the form a second time.
•    Update images- Images that look old or outdated can give a bad first impression. Try to use newer unique images that reflect the brand of your company and portray a clear message without words.
•    Make sure you content is updated- Out-dated content or seeing in your footer that your last update was a year ago will send a negative message. If you provide rates, phone numbers or an address, visitors might be skeptical if that information is still accurate.
•    Provide interesting blog posts relevant to those who will read- If updating your blog is where you spend most of your energy, post content that has an interesting hook and that others will want to read and share. Find newsworthy topics, post a question to solicit feedback or provide an original perspective. Remember: Always keep your target audience in mind.
•    Check that your navigation is functioning- Click through your navigation and fix any links that do not redirect your users to where they expect. Sometimes simple changes on the backend will switch page links and cause confusion.

It is a good idea to check your site at least once a month and click through as if you searched, landed and wanted more information. Internet users have a short attention span and if your site is their first impression of your business, you want it to be a satisfying, educational and flawless experience.
